Soak Your Nuts
There is a big push out there for the use of soy milk for folks who can’t eat dairy or want to be healthy. The debate about soy is a huge one.. is it good? is it bad? I can’t say in 2 sentences or less, so…. it’s for another post and another time. There are plenty of other “milks” out there. You can make your own nut milks at home. There are a few ways to do this, but here is my basic method.
Soak Your Nuts
Soaking nuts overnight or for a few hours in room temperature distilled water helps in digestion. Nuts have natural enzyme inhibitors to protect them from the elements… If you soak your nuts in water, you get rid of these inhibitors and allows for your body to absorb more nutrients. Phytic acid, which holds back the absorption of minerals, is also removed. So, soak your nuts and then get rid of the water (full of acid and bad stuff)
Buy Good Nuts
The salt and chemical coated nuts are not really the ones I’m talking about. Peanuts and peanut butter contain a lot of pesticides, so I would spend a little more and buy organic here. Roasted nuts have much less nutritional value.. the life force is cooked right out of them. Look for RAW, ORGANIC, and SIMPLE nuts with no other ingredients on the label.
Try Nut Milk
You can make nut milk with most nuts… almond and cashews being my personal favorite, but you can also use hazelnuts, walnuts, and brazil nuts. Here’s what you need:
- 1 cup of raw, organic, nuts
- distilled water
- agave nectar or even stevia (to taste)
Here’s what you do:
- soak your nuts overnight in a glass jar in 2 cups of water
- strain and rinse your nuts
- put rinsed nuts in blender with 3 cups of distilled water
- throw in some agave (optional, but recommended)
- blend on high for a few min
- strain again into a pitcher
- enjoy
The world would be a lot better if everyone felt as good as I do when I soak my nuts…
